Looking for a small, nimble, yet powerful single board computer? The N100 Edge could be the answer to your prayers. Packed with a robust x86 architecture, this prototype unit can run Windows or Linux, making it a versatile choice for tech enthusiasts.
This is the upcoming N100 Edge SBC, Powered by a 3.4Ghz CPU and backed by up to 16Gb Of DDR5 this could turn out to be an awesome option for Emulation like PS2, Gamecube, PSP and even WiiU! A small Company known as CompuBench sent over one of the first prototypes for testing and so far it’s actually a very good single board computer but it still need’s a bit of work for sure.
The N100 Edge boasts a compact design comparable to the Raspberry Pi, but with a hefty heatsink to ensure stable performance under demanding loads. I/O is covered with a 3.5mm audio jack, full-sized HDMI (capable of 4K at 60fps), and USB type-C for power input. Four USB 3.1 ports and a Gigabit Ethernet port round out the offering.
The device is powered by Intel’s N100 CPU, a quad-core, four-threaded chip capable of boosting up to 3.4 GHz. Multiple RAM and storage variants are available, with up to 16 GB of LPDDR5 running at 4800 MHz and eMMC 5.1 storage up to 256 GB.
In terms of performance, this little board packs a punch. Windows 11 runs smoothly, with speedy web browsing thanks to Gigabit Ethernet. The CPU turbo boosts to 3.4 GHz on two cores, or 2.9 GHz across all four, leading to impressive results in Geekbench and 3DMark benchmark tests. However, it does lack built-in WiFi, a minor trade-off considering its power.
Gaming on the N100 Edge is a pleasant surprise. Older titles like Minecraft, Skyrim, Dirt 3, and Left 4 Dead 2 run smoothly, delivering a playable experience. The device also shines in emulation. Dolphin Emulator, PCSX2, and Cemu run well, handling games like Tatsunoko vs Capcom, Gran Turismo 4, God of War 2, and Bayonetta 2.
The N100 can get quite hot under heavy loads, but it hasn’t hit thermal throttling in our testing. It’s worth noting that the fan runs on a 5-volt supply, so noise isn’t an issue, though a higher voltage could potentially offer better cooling.
Overall, the N100 Edge is a promising addition to the single-board computer market. It’s a snappy system with impressive capabilities, especially considering its size. We hope to see a dual-channel RAM option in the future to squeeze out even more performance. As it stands, the N100 Edge offers a compelling choice for anyone looking for an affordable, versatile x86 SBC.
